The foot in those with diabetes is at increased risk for complication because of a number of reasons. This at risk foot is often called the diabetic foot. In diabetes there is damage to the nerves, so any damage to the diabetic foot can go undetected. Also in diabetes there are vascular problems so when a complication happens to the diabetic foot, there is going to be healing problems. There are many other complications of diabetes apart from these two that put the diabetic foot at increased risk for damage. This include damage to the collagen in ligaments that make the joints stiffer in the diabetic foot. There are also issues with the immune system that affects healing in the diabetic foot. Other diabetes complication such as kidney disease may limit the choice of drug to treat diabetic foot infections. The eye problems in diabetes may also affect the ability of the person with diabetes to see the foot and detect diabetic foot complications.
